BDM conducted a value stream mapping activity for its generation client on February 10, 2009.  This event brought together plant managers, maintenance managers, warehouse team leads, and Corporate Generation Supply Chain to evaluate the impact of new inventory performance metrics on Generation's plant fleet.  This activity supported the inventory optimization strategy BDM has been developing with the client. The team reviewed critical job tasks to support these metrics and identified the gaps that could potentially impact inventory performance.  There were several key recommendations developed from the value stream map which were published to executive management.  BDM will work with the relevant teams to address these recommendations with action plans.  Some of these recommendations included:

  • Implement a bill of materials process across the fleet as an integral part of the company's work management Initiative and keep inventory levels tied to critical equipment
  • Drive standardization through training for both planners and warehouse team leads to fully utilize the tools in the company's maintenance management and inventory management system
  • Work with corporate procurement to eliminate constraints created in the materials ordering system
  • Address additional resource requirements to better support the bill of materials process and provide additional analytical support to the warehouse for inventory issues.
